Bufo Alvarius

The 5-MeO-DMT medicine of the Sonoran Desert toad — a brief, complete, non-dual awakening.

Bufo Alvarius — also known as "the toad" — refers to the secretion of the Bufo alvarius (Incilius alvarius) toad of the Sonoran Desert, which contains 5-MeO-DMT, one of the most potent naturally occurring psychedelic compounds known. Unlike the longer journey of ayahuasca, a Bufo session lasts approximately 20–40 minutes — but within that time, many people describe the most profound experience of their lives.

5-MeO-DMT can dissolve the boundary between self and everything else, producing what mystics and philosophers call "non-dual awareness" — the direct experience that you are not separate from the universe. For many, this single experience permanently shifts their relationship to fear, identity, and meaning.

At Mariri, Bufo sessions are conducted one person at a time in a private, ceremonial container. A trained facilitator stays present throughout, providing grounded support as you return to ordinary consciousness. Breathwork is often used before the session to prepare the body and nervous system.

Bufo is one of the most powerful medicines we offer and is not appropriate for everyone. Our team conducts a careful intake process to ensure it is the right fit for your current health and psychological state.

Lineage & Tradition

5-MeO-DMT from Bufo alvarius does not have a long indigenous ceremonial history in the same way as ayahuasca — its modern ceremonial use has largely developed over the past few decades. Our approach draws on the growing body of research and practice developed by pioneers including Octavio Rettig and Martin Ball, combined with principles of trauma-informed care and somatic integration.

Preparation

A 24-hour fast (water and light fruit only) is recommended before a Bufo session. Avoid all other psychedelics for at least one week prior. Please complete our detailed intake form disclosing all medications and health history. Bufo is contraindicated with SSRIs, lithium, and several cardiac medications. Sessions are booked individually and always include a pre-session conversation with your facilitator.
